Lab Manager / Research Associate


Located in Cambridge, MA, Civetta is developing novel therapeutics through small molecule targeting of beta-propeller domain proteins.  Beta-propellers are a class of highly conserved structural proteins that are implicated in a range of indications, including multiple types of cancer, neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases.  Backed by Deerfield Management, Civetta was founded by William Sellers (Broad Institute and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute) and Eric Fischer (Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School) with the mission to leverage the wide array of biologic functions in which propeller proteins participate to discover impactful new medicines for patients.

The position.  We are seeking a motivated and technically experienced Lab Manger to help facilitate general lab operations and support our research efforts at Civetta.  This position encompasses lab operations ranging from strategic planning, lab consumables and equipment management to safety and vendor liaison. In addition, this candidate will help propel our ongoing drug discovery programs. This is an excellent career opportunity for individuals looking to work in a fast-paced, dynamic biotech environment. 


Key Responsibilities

Lab management (50%)

  • Serve as the primary contact for day-to-day site operations
  • Coordinate with the research teams for the allocation of lab space and equipment
  • Facilitate capital expenditure planning and budgeting with R&D team and finance; maintain equipment tags and registry
  • Coordinate installation, calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Manage laboratory stock rooms and inventory systems, R&D packaging and shipping , and lab deliveries
  • Coordinate waste disposal & DOT signature
  • Manage the critical alarm system and respond off hours to alarm events as required
  • Perform routine equipment management and preventative maintenance as needed (e.g. tissue culture incubator cleaning, water maintenance, etc)
  • Be responsible for autoclaving and glassware

Lab-based research and support (50%):

  • Thaw, culture, expand, maintain and document tumor cell lines
  • Develop and maintain master and working frozen cell banks
  • Routinely perform or outsource quality control measures such as mycoplasma testing and STR profiling for cell line authentication
  • Harvest and prepare cells for experimental needs for colleagues in biology and protein sciences
  • Perform or assist with cell-based and plate-based biochemical assays
  • Prepare cell culture media and other reagents



  • B.S. or M.S. degree in a scientific discipline (i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Engineering)
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a biological research lab setting, as a lab manager or coordinator (including lab inventory control, purchasing and procurement, health and safety, shipping and receiving) and as an individual contributor (including mammalian cell culture and experimentation)
  • Excellent record-keeping and organizational skill with a strong understanding of the processes and protocols required in a scientific research organization
  • Basic project management knowledge and experience
  • Logistics experience is desired
  • An understanding of applicable governmental safety and health regulations to include: OSHA, EPA and DOT is desired
  • Ability to exercise independent discretion and judgment to solve problems is important, as well as to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Must be highly trained in sterile technique, with experience with plate-based assays and liquid-handling techniques
