Overview

Principal Scientist/Associate Director, Biophysics

Located in Cambridge, MA, Civetta is developing novel therapeutics through the targeting of beta-propeller domain proteins.  Beta-propellers are a class of highly conserved structural proteins that are implicated in a range of indications, including multiple types of cancer, neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases.  Backed by Deerfield Management, Civetta was founded by William Sellers (Broad Institute and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute) and Eric Fischer (Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School) with the mission to leverage the wide array of biologic functions in which propeller proteins participate to discover impactful new medicines for patients.

We are building a team of talented, dedicated scientists who share our vision and our passion to discover groundbreaking new drugs to treat some of the most difficult diseases, including cancer.  If you are an accomplished life sciences professional that can bring significant energy, passion, and expertise to the team, we welcome the opportunity to consider you for a position.

The position.  Civetta is seeking to hire an accomplished biophysicist to contribute to our drug discovery programs and the development of our beta-propeller platform.  This role reports to the Director of Protein Sciences.  We are seeking a scientist with significant pharmaceutical/biotech industry experience in biophysics to join our multi-disciplinary team to support all of our target identification, compound screening, hit validation, lead optimization, and mechanistic biology efforts.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Design overall biophysics strategy and lead efforts directed towards the screening and characterization of propeller-binding small molecules and protein-protein interactions.
  • Execute robust SPR assays as an essential part of our drug discovery screening cascades.
  • Develop and implement SPR-based fragment screening capabilities.
  • Routinely and consistently evaluate small molecules for interaction in multiple and orthogonal biophysical assay formats.
  • Manage CROs to enable biophysical and biochemical assay support.
  • Balance internal and CRO resources to solve problems and drive progress.
  • Collaborate with chemistry, biochemistry, and biology colleagues to contribute and evaluate progress towards project/platform goals.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for leadership and participate in internal/external meetings.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or B.S./M.S. degree with relevant experience in biophysics, biochemistry, biology, chemical biology or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of pharmaceutical/biotech industry experience in SPR assay development methods for assessing protein-small molecule and protein-protein interactions with consistent, high-quality data analysis and independent troubleshooting.
  • Additional experience with other biophysical and biochemical methods (DSF, MST, ITC, FP, TR-FRET) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with enzymatic and PPI biochemical assay development.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects at different hit triage stages.
  • Exceptional communication skills, and ability to effectively present data within the company and to other stakeholders.
  • Adept at leading and working within cross-functional scientific teams, and able to work effectively with teams to deliver project data within timelines.
  • Strong publication record of biophysical data and analysis in peer-reviewed journals.
